Summary

OPPOSE

AB 1078 seeks to sideline local school boards’ power to make decisions about the curriculum taught in their school district, and instead, follow the guidance of Sacramento bureaucrats. It’s the proverbial camel’s nose in the tent of local education decision-making. This bill is the height of legislative overreach and is an affront to school board autonomy. This bill is aimed at silencing parents and school board members opposed to politicized curricula in schools, such as divisive critical race theory and inappropriate sexualized content. Californians would prefer that the legislature find ways to improve reading scores than foment an unnecessary culture war. And taxpayers would rather keep scarce education funds in the classroom rather than Sacramento offices and courtrooms.
