AB 665 would allow a minor 12 and older to consent to mental health treatment, counseling, or to be sent to residential shelter services without the consent of their parents for any reason. Current law allows a minor to consent to mental health services only if that minor presents a danger of serious physical or mental harm to themselves or to others, or is the alleged victim of incest or child abuse. The responsibility for evaluating if a minor is mature enough for the service is put in the hands of professional personnel rather than parents, leading to counseling the minor without involving parents or guardians at all. If passed, this dangerous bill will certainly be used to encourage LGTBQ-questioning kids to leave home and instead enter the state system.
