SB 43 expands the definition of “gravely disabled” to also include individuals who are at significant risk of or currently suffering from serious harm to their physical or mental health due to a mental health disorder, substance use disorder, or both. By expanding the definition of gravely disabled, this bill will allow families to bring treatment to the far too many people who are suffering psychotic disorders in unsafe environments, which often leads to severe injury, incarceration, homelessness, or death.
