In response to California Department of Education guidance, which directs schools and teachers to lie to parents when their child changes their gender at school, a growing number of California school districts have passed parental notification policies to inform parents if their child changes their gender or name on official school records. In addition, the California Attorney General’s office recently admitted in federal court that the state’s guidance is legally unenforceable. Now, Asm. Ward has introduced AB 1955 in an attempt to skirt local school boards and court rulings by codifying the unconstitutional CDE policy, which would ban parental notification policies and allow schools to keep student records secret from parents.
