SB 222 attempts to shift the liability for damages from natural disasters to oil and gas companies. The bill allows California residents to sue private companies—primarily oil and gas companies—for damages caused by “climate disasters or extreme weather events linked to misleading practices or false information about how their fossil fuel products contribute to climate change.” Wiener’s war on California’s oil and gas industry would open the door to extensive litigation, harm California’s economy, and raise gas and heating prices for Californians.
